We visited a golf course, water treatment facility and two seaside locations. 400 species alone have been recorded in and around Loreto making it a paradise for birders.Tom took us out for 5 hours at 100 pesos each per hour which is a great deal. Set near two coastlines and three mountain ranges that provide riparian, inland and sea birding one can expect to see birds in the 50 plus range with expert local birder Tom Haglund. Loreto Mexico has so much to offer in the way of birds. We had a great trip, and couldn’t recommend him more highly. Tom picked us up at our place in the morning and dropped us off afterwards, and gave us some options for going to different spots to see birds that would be new to us. It was one sighting after another the whole morning, and I’m happy to say I learned how to identify some new birds with him. He also took us to see a Costas Hummingbird nest with two chicks in it - what a treat. Between the mountains and the Sea of Cortez this morning we saw 55 species in three hours and I couldn’t have been happier! This included the brilliant Xantu’s Hummingbird and the Gray Thrasher, both of which are endemic to Baja California. He has extra pairs of good quality binoculars for people who need them, and is wonderfully passionate about all things avian, sharing stories about birds he’s observed nesting in this part of the world. He really knows his birds and where to find them! Furthermore he’s a very personable and thoughtful guide. If you enjoy birds, Tom Haglund of BCS Birds is the guide for you.
